Dangerous Toys for 2013 - Choking Hazards

While toys are getting safer, parents still have to be careful when shopping for their children this holiday season.  The U.S. Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) produces an annual list of children’s products that are dangerous.  Many of these questionable items are, nevertheless, still on the shelves of our big box stores like Wal-Mart and K-Mart.  While legislation has reduced the levels of lead, lead has not gone away completely and can still be a problem.  PIRG points out that many action figure toys, and even toy packages, contain high levels of lead.  They detected high levels of lead in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles pencil case, and the Captain America soft shield.  While they pointed out the high levels of lead, they also pointed that the levels of lead are actually below the legal limits in the United States.

NBC News, also, recently provided a selection of toys from the PIRG list that may pose choking hazards for your children.*

For a complete list of potentially harmful children’s merchandise, consult the entire annual safety report from PIRG:

From 2001 to 2011, 80 children died from choking on balls, balloons, marbles, or other similar items.  Pay careful attention to your children’s play-time activities. With careful supervision, children will avoid falling into the traps presented by negligent toy manufacturers.  But you can’t watch your children every minute of the day, and it only takes a second for something tragic to happen. With the aid of the PIRG annual report, you can hopefully avoid putting in your son’s or daughter’s hands anything that could harm them, and you can rest easier.
