There are several websites that advertise “free credit report.”  When you actually contact them, your free credit report is available for free, so long as you sign up at a monthly charge for some sort of a credit protection service. There is a truly free credit report entity authorized by the Federal Trade Commission that requires the three major credit reporting agencies to provide you with a free credit report at least one time a year. The entity is: annualcreditreport.com. Their telephone is 1-877-322-8228. You could contact them by phone to receive a paper application that you can mail in or you can actually do it online. It’s easy!  See how your creditors are reporting you. Sometimes you can even see the payoff on outstanding loans. You also can see who made inquiries so that you can see who is actually checking you out to try to give you a credit card application or other credit. For example, our bookkeeper recently checked her credit report through the above website and found that numerous credit cards have been making inquiries on her, obviously in an attempt to send her a credit card promotion.
