PSA – Be on the Lookout for Deceptive Mail Regarding Deed Information
/PSA – According to The Seacoast Online, New Hampshire property owners have been receiving mail from several companies offering to provide deed documents for an outrageously inflated price. Some of the companies are charging up to $100 for documents that can be obtained at local county offices for as little as $2.
In some instances, these mailings look like official governmental demands. The Rockingham County Registry of Deeds is looking into the matter and tentatively states that individuals who have recently transferred deeds seem to be the targets. These people recently purchased property and are probably waiting for a copy of their deed. They receive the solicitation and think that they need to comply immediately.
BE ALERT
BE WARY of any documents received in the mail demanding that you immediately send money, EVEN IF IT LOOKS OFFICIAL. Check with your local governmental offices. These scam companies operate under names such as “Secured Document Services,” “Record Retrieval Department,” “Proxy Data Retrieval,” and “Deed Retrieval Services.” If you are unsure, contact your local government office.
