Motorcycle Riders, Review Coverage
/Underinsured Motorist Coverage for Motorcycles needed when careless person has inadequate coverage. But, watch for pitfalls in motorcycle policy.
Many individuals have their cars on one liability insurance policy and their motorcycle on another policy. If they follow our advice, they also have an umbrella policy to increase UM coverage in all vehicles, be they an operator, passenger or even a pedestrian. We recommend at least $250,000 liability and UM coverage with at least a $1Mil. Umbrella policy providing UM coverage as well. Recently, there has been litigation in New Hampshire where an insurance company tried to deny coverage for their customer who was seriously injured in a motorcycle crash. The insurance company claimed that the umbrella policy requires a minimum coverage for the underlying policy which was met on the cars but not the motorcycle. The NH Supreme Court ruled against the insurance company on technical grounds.
Always check with a competent insurance agent to make sure that you have excess uninsured motorist coverage (UM) that protects you while driving all of your vehicles including your motorcycle. Get it in writing to protect you and your loved ones is a tragedy occurs.
